Overview
Sheep (Ovis aries) are domesticated quadrupedal ruminant mammals of the genus Ovis, raised worldwide for wool, meat, milk, and hides. As ruminants, they possess a multi-chambered stomach adapted to fermenting plant material, and they are a central subject of veterinary, parasitological, and biochemical research because of their economic and agricultural importance. Disease surveillance in sheep flocks, particularly the burden of internal parasites, is a recurring concern in livestock-producing regions. Zoological Research has published peer-reviewed studies addressing several aspects of ovine biology and health, including an assessment of helminth parasite prevalence and distribution among sheep in the Gudaya Bila District of East Wallaga, Ethiopia, and a coprological examination of ovine fasciolosis within a community-based sheep breeding program in the Horro District of Western Ethiopia. Complementing these epidemiological investigations, the journal has also published a biochemical study on the purification and characterization of xanthine oxidase from sheep liver, an enzyme involved in purine metabolism. Together these works span parasitology, veterinary epidemiology, and enzymology in sheep. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to sheep published in the journal.
