Overview

Cervical cancer is a malignancy that develops in the cells of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina, and it is one of the most common cancers affecting Women's Reproductive Health. The great majority of cases are caused by persistent infection with high-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection that can trigger abnormal cellular changes leading to precancerous lesions and, over time, invasive cancer. Because early cervical cancer often produces no symptoms, screening methods such as the Pap smear and HPV testing, together with HPV vaccination, are central to prevention and early detection. When detected early, cervical cancer is highly treatable, and management may include surgery, radiotherapy including brachytherapy, and other therapies depending on stage. Research in Women's Reproductive Health addresses the awareness and uptake of cervical screening across different populations, the molecular pathways involved in cervical carcinogenesis, and approaches to treatment and prevention. Studies relevant to this journal examine screening practice and its determinants among women in Ethiopia, Nigeria, Uganda, and elsewhere, the role of HPV in virus-induced carcinogenesis, the PI3K/mTOR/AKT signaling pathway in cervical cancer, the evaluation of cervical lesions using markers such as p16/INK4a and Ki-67, abnormal Pap smears in women with obesity, brachytherapy outcomes, and nanomedicine for gynecological cancers, reflecting the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of this disease.
