Overview

The respiratory system is the set of organs and structures that mediate gas exchange, taking up oxygen from the environment and eliminating carbon dioxide produced by metabolism. In air-breathing vertebrates it comprises a conducting portion, including the nasal passages, larynx, trachea, and bronchial tree, and a respiratory portion, the alveoli, where oxygen and carbon dioxide diffuse across a thin blood-gas barrier between air and the pulmonary capillaries. Across animal taxa, respiratory strategies vary widely, from gills and cutaneous exchange to the highly efficient flow-through lungs of birds, reflecting adaptation to differing environments and metabolic demands. Respiratory physiology integrates ventilation, perfusion, diffusion, and the control of breathing, and is assessed through measures such as alveolar-arterial oxygen gradients and gas-exchange efficiency. Disease and injury, including infection, inflammation, and acute respiratory distress, impair this exchange and provoke compensatory and pathological responses. Research relevant to this area examines the biochemical basis of controlled breathing, the pathogenesis and therapy of respiratory viral infection, alveolar-arterial oxygen differences in the diagnosis of acute respiratory distress syndrome, the effects of air pollution and second-hand smoke, and immune and exercise-related influences on respiratory health. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to animal and comparative biology, addressing the structure, physiology, and pathology of the respiratory system and the mechanisms of gas exchange across organisms.
