Overview

Language is a rule-governed symbolic system that enables communication, organized across interacting levels of structure: phonology (the sound system), morphology (word formation), syntax (the arrangement of words into grammatical sentences), semantics (meaning), and pragmatics (language use in context). In linguistics and the cognitive and behavioral sciences, language is studied both as an abstract competence and as observable Verbal Behavior shaped by learning histories and environmental contingencies. Within a behavior-analytic framework, Verbal Behavior is treated as operant activity acquired and maintained through social reinforcement, complementing accounts of how children acquire grammar and vocabulary and how bilingual and second-language (EFL) learners develop productive and receptive skills. Core research areas include language acquisition and development, syntactic complexity and writing quality, semantic and discourse processing, the aesthetic and rhetorical dimensions of poetic language, atypical language profiles such as those associated with autism spectrum conditions, and qualitative methods for analyzing naturally occurring talk. The discipline matters because language underpins thought, instruction, social coordination, and clinical assessment, making its measurement and modeling central to psychology, education, and communication science. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research examining the structure, acquisition, and use of language across these populations and methodological traditions.
