Overview
Circadian rhythms are biological processes that follow an approximately 24-hour cycle, regulating sleep-wake patterns, hormone release, body temperature, and other physiological functions in response to environmental cues such as light and darkness. Research published in Sleep And Sleep Disorder Research examines circadian rhythms across diverse contexts, including their molecular underpinnings through the endocannabinoid system, their disruption in cancer stem cells, and their influence on sleep regulation. Studies have investigated how circadian factors interact with physical activity to affect sleep quality in adolescents and adults, and how meal timing and sleep habits relate to circadian typology and academic performance in school-aged children. The journal has also explored circadian-related mechanisms in clinical populations, including the role of melatonin in breastfeeding and perinatal health, the pineal gland's involvement in drug dependence, and sleep disturbances in conditions such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and dementia. Additional work addresses behavioral aspects, such as bedtime procrastination and its psychological correlates. Understanding circadian rhythms is essential for developing interventions that improve sleep quality, optimize health outcomes across the lifespan, and address sleep disorders in both general and clinical populations.
