Overview
Lung cancer is malignant neoplasia arising from the epithelium of the bronchi, bronchioles or alveoli, and remains a leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide. It is broadly divided into non-small-cell lung cancer, comprising adenocarcinoma, squamous-cell and large-cell subtypes, and small-cell lung cancer, which differ in biology, growth rate and treatment. Carcinogenesis is driven principally by tobacco smoke together with occupational and environmental exposures and acquired driver mutations, and progression involves invasion, angiogenesis and metastasis, frequently to adrenal glands, bone, brain and liver. Diagnosis integrates imaging, histopathology and increasingly molecular profiling, and management combines surgery, radiotherapy, cytotoxic chemotherapy, targeted agents and immunotherapy according to stage and molecular subtype, with early detection central to outcome. Work in this area covers lung cancer with isolated adrenal metastases, statins and lung cancer, the role of heparin in lung cancer, complementary and alternative approaches to cancer prevention, proposed methods for prevention, diagnosis, screening and management of lung cancer, evolution of solid tumour-cell properties in vitro, mortality profiling in a pneumophthisiology department, immunotherapy and trends in pulmonary resection, and a non-animal-methods platform for cancer biomarker development. The journal publishes peer-reviewed clinical and translational research on the biology, diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer.
