Overview
The tongue is a muscular organ of the oral cavity, composed of interlacing intrinsic and extrinsic skeletal muscles covered by a specialized mucosa bearing taste buds, that is essential to mastication, swallowing, taste, and the articulation of speech. It is highly vascular and richly innervated, receiving motor supply from the hypoglossal nerve and sensory and gustatory innervation from branches of the trigeminal, facial, and glossopharyngeal nerves, and its mobility and tone are central to oral and pharyngeal function. The tongue is subject to congenital anomalies such as ankyloglossia, inflammatory and ulcerative conditions, cystic lesions, and neoplasia, and as part of the upper aerodigestive tract it is a frequent site of oral cancer. Research relevant to this area examines oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma and the prognostic value of microvessel quantification, oral ulceration and lingual cysts, and the molecular landscape of oral cancer including TP53 mutations. Further work addresses oral mucosal disease such as lichen planus, the relationship between nutrition, the microbiota, and oral health, and surgical conditions of the oral cavity. The field connects oral pathology, head and neck oncology, and otolaryngology. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to the tongue and oral cavity, including tongue carcinoma, oral lesions, and the pathology of the oral mucosa.
