Overview

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is a group of cancers that arise from the squamous cells lining the mucosal surfaces of the head and neck region, including the mouth, throat, larynx, nasal cavity, and sinuses. It is the most common cancer type in this area and can grow and spread to nearby lymph nodes if not detected and treated early. The principal risk factors are tobacco and alcohol use, which act together to substantially raise risk, while infection with certain types of human papillomavirus is an increasingly recognized cause, particularly of cancers of the oropharynx, and tends to be associated with distinct clinical behaviour. Treatment is often multidisciplinary and may combine surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted or immune-based approaches depending on tumour site and stage. As a journal focused on otolaryngology, this page situates head and neck squamous cell carcinoma within the broader study of disorders of the ear, nose, throat, and related structures. Related peer-reviewed work indexed here includes a study of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in squamous-cell carcinoma of the larynx, a relevant subsite of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The page assembles encyclopedic reference information on this malignancy consistent with the journal's otolaryngologic scope.
