Overview

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions in which the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the eye to the brain, becomes progressively damaged, leading to loss of vision that can advance to blindness if untreated. It is frequently, though not always, associated with raised pressure inside the eye. Because the early stages often produce no noticeable symptoms and typically affect peripheral vision first, glaucoma can progress unnoticed, which makes regular eye examinations and early detection important. Within ophthalmology, diagnosis relies on measuring intraocular pressure, assessing the optic nerve, and testing the visual field, while management aims to lower eye pressure and slow disease progression through medication, laser procedures, or surgery. As a major cause of irreversible vision loss worldwide, glaucoma is a central concern of Ophthalmic Science, connecting to broader study of the optic nerve, intraocular pressure, ocular imaging, and the prevention of avoidable blindness. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to glaucoma and to the wider study of ophthalmology and eye health.
