Registration and identifiers
Registration makes the journal and each article citable and findable by a stable name. Selective indexing is a separate assessment, set out below.

Metadata and discovery services
Deposited metadata is what lets other services find and describe the journal’s articles.
A discovery service builds its own record from this deposited metadata. Inclusion and refresh are decided by each service on its own terms.

Each of the four roles on this page does a different job. Registration gives the journal and its articles stable identifiers; discovery services build their own records from the metadata deposited with those identifiers; selective, journal-level indexing is a further assessment that each database makes on its own criteria and timetable; and preservation keeps the published version available for the long term.
This page lists what is verified for this journal in each of those roles, as checked on 23 September 2026. The editorial office confirms the current status of any further database on request.
Eligible NIH-funded manuscripts may be deposited individually in PubMed Central through the NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS). That route operates per manuscript, through the NIH system, for the manuscript an author deposits.
Preservation
Keeping the record available
This journal’s content is committed to Portico, a not-for-profit digital-preservation archive run by ITHAKA (the organization behind JSTOR). As articles are deposited they enter Portico’s permanent archive, so the scholarly record stays available for the long term — even if a title one day ceases to publish.
