Before you start

Choose the article type first

The article type sets the structure and the standard a manuscript is held to. Choose it before drafting, and state it in the submission.

Research ArticleDescribe the study design, methods, results and interpretation in the sections below.
Review ArticleDefine the question, summarize the literature and explain the synthesis approach.
Systematic Review and Meta-analysisReport the search, selection, appraisal and synthesis methods, following PRISMA as applicable.
Methods ArticleExplain the method or tool, its purpose, validation and the materials needed to assess or reuse it.
Case ReportPresent the clinical context, case details, consent and discussion, following CARE as applicable.
Short CommunicationReport a complete, self-contained contribution with methods and evidence appropriate to the question.
Data/Resource ArticleDescribe provenance, curation, access conditions and reuse documentation for the resource.

Editorial and Perspective/Commentary are invitation-only.

Length, reference count and the number of figures and tables follow the type and the needs of the study. The editorial office confirms any limit that applies to a specific submission, and the Aims and Scope page states the subject boundary.

How to structure the manuscript

The structure below applies to Research Article submissions. Other approved types use the sections appropriate to their format and research question.

Title pageTitle, all author names and affiliations, and the corresponding author with a contact address. Keep it in a separate file where double-blind review is requested.
AbstractA Research Article uses a structured abstract with objective, methods, results and conclusions. For other types, present an abstract appropriate to the contribution and any applicable instructions.
KeywordsTerms a reader in the field would search for, including the organ and the disease or process under study.
IntroductionThe question, what is already established, and what this work adds.
MethodsDesign, setting, participants or specimens, inclusion and exclusion criteria, procedures and the analysis plan, in enough detail to be repeated.
ResultsThe findings, reported with the measures that suit the design. Where effect estimates apply, report them with their uncertainty; a descriptive series reports what was observed without implying an estimate it cannot support.
DiscussionInterpretation against the existing literature, the limitations of the design, and what the work does and does not establish.
DeclarationsFunding, conflicts of interest, ethics approval and consent, data availability, author contributions and acknowledgments.

Interventional clinical trials must be registered in an accepted public trial registry at or before the first participant provides consent for enrollment. The registry name, registration number, and registration date must be reported in the manuscript.

Every empirical research manuscript must include a data-availability statement. Deposit data in a trusted repository where the terms of consent and any proprietary or ethical restriction allow it, and give the accession or repository link. Where release is restricted, say so and state how a reader may apply.

Research involving people, identifiable data or animals must report the approving committee and reference, and must state that informed consent was obtained where it applies. Disclose any use of generative AI in preparing the manuscript; AI tools are not authors.

Files

Figures, tables, references and supplementary material

Prepare files so that a reader and a typesetter can both use them.

FiguresSupply each figure as a separate high-resolution file in a standard format, with axes labeled, units given and a legend that states what was measured and in how many subjects or specimens. Choose palettes that remain readable for color-blind readers.
TablesSupply tables as editable text, not images, each with a caption and footnotes defining every abbreviation.
ReferencesComplete and consistent, with a DOI wherever one exists, and every in-text citation present in the list and the reverse.
Supplementary filesLabel each file, cite it in the text, and describe its contents in a short index.
PermissionsObtain written permission for any figure, table or extended quotation reused from another source, and cite the original.

What happens next

From submission to publication

1SubmitUse one of the three approved routes below. Authors must use only one submission route for the same manuscript.
2ScreeningAll submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.
3ReviewSingle-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts. For double-blind review, remove author names, affiliations, acknowledgments, funding details, institution names, and other identifying information from the reviewer manuscript. Provide identifying information separately in the title-page file or submission form.
4DecisionEditorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Decisions remain independent of fees, membership, editorial roles and paid services.
5ProductionAfter acceptance the article is copyedited and typeset, proofs are sent to the corresponding author, and a Crossref DOI is registered. Articles are published open access under the Creative Commons Attribution License, CC BY 4.0, and authors retain copyright in their work.
