Research areas
Journal of New Developments in Chemistry considers original research, reviews, short communications and technical notes that make a clear, supported advance in chemical knowledge, methods, materials, measurement or molecular-level explanation. In every case, chemistry must be the central scholarly contribution.
Inorganic and coordination chemistry
Main-group, transition-metal, organometallic, coordination, cluster and bioinorganic chemistry, including synthesis, bonding, speciation, metal–ligand interactions and reactivity.
Physical chemistry and spectroscopy
Thermodynamics, equilibria, kinetics, reaction mechanisms, electrochemistry, photochemistry, spectroscopy, chemical dynamics and molecular interactions.
Materials, polymer and nanochemistry
Synthesis, composition and chemical characterization of functional solids, polymers, nanomaterials, porous frameworks, composites and biomaterials, including structure–property relationships.
Analytical chemistry and measurement science
Separation science, chromatography, mass spectrometry, spectroscopy, electroanalysis, chemical sensors and biosensors, including substantive bioanalytical and pharmaceutical method development and validation.
Computational and theoretical chemistry
Quantum chemistry, electronic-structure theory, molecular simulation, statistical mechanics, chemoinformatics and data-driven methods addressing chemical questions with appropriate verification or validation.
Medicinal chemistry and chemical biology
Medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry, molecular biochemistry, molecular design and synthesis, structure–activity relationships, chemical probes, enzyme chemistry and molecular toxicology. Biological evaluation may support the chemical advance.
Energy, environment and sustainable chemistry
Energy conversion and storage, hydrogen chemistry, electrocatalysis, corrosion, pollutant fate and remediation, green synthesis, renewable feedstocks and resource recovery.
Coverage also includes natural products and food chemistry; forensic and toxicological chemistry; industrial, process and formulation chemistry; and supramolecular, surface and interface chemistry. The scientific contribution determines fit; these examples are not exhaustive.
Clinical outcomes, patient-care protocols, epidemiological surveys and diagnostic-performance studies are outside scope when their principal contribution is medical and lacks substantive chemical or analytical development. Chemistry-led biomedical research may fit; a complete molecular mechanism is not required for every study.
Article types
The formats below have preparation requirements in the Instructions for Authors. For a format not covered there, discuss suitability with the editorial office before preparing the submission.
Original Research
An original chemical question investigated through experimental, analytical or computational methods.
Review Article
A critical synthesis of a defined area of chemical research, including systematic approaches where appropriate.
Short Communication
A concise report of an original chemical finding supported by sufficient evidence.
Technical Note
A focused chemical or analytical method, instrument, procedure or technical development with appropriate validation.
Before submitting
The journal evaluates fit, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality and relevance.
Prepare the evidence
- State the chemical question and contribution clearly
- Report methods, materials, controls and characterization in sufficient detail
- Provide figures, schemes, data and supporting information appropriate to the study
- Separate observations from proposed mechanisms and state limitations
Prepare the declarations
- Confirm originality and one-journal submission
- State author contributions, funding and competing interests
- Include a data-availability statement for empirical research
- Report ethics, consent and trial registration where applicable
Peer review
Peer review: Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.
Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
