Overview
Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behavior, examining mental processes such as perception, cognition, emotion, motivation, and learning together with their behavioral expression and their biological and social foundations. It spans numerous subfields, including cognitive, developmental, social, clinical, and health psychology, and it employs experimental, observational, psychometric, and qualitative methods to describe, explain, and predict how people think, feel, and act. Applied psychology translates this knowledge into the assessment and treatment of mental health conditions, the promotion of well-being, and the understanding of relationships, identity, and behavior change, and it intersects with neuroscience, medicine, and the social sciences. Within mental-health practice, psychological theory underpins psychotherapy and interventions targeting emotion regulation, cognition, and adaptive functioning. The subject matter examined in this area includes positive psychology and aging, the health consequences of emotional repression, psychoanalytic training and theory, the psychology of materialistic aspiration and well-being, self-monitoring in self-management and behavior change, mental health among displaced and marginalized populations, the representation of abstract concepts through conceptual metaphor, and identity regulation through honor and shame. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research across psychology and its application to psychotherapy practice and mental health.
