Overview

Biomarkers are objectively measurable biological characteristics that serve as indicators of normal physiological processes, pathological states, or responses to an exposure or intervention. They range from molecules detectable in blood, tissue, or other fluids, such as proteins, metabolites, nucleic acids, and microRNAs, to genetic and epigenetic signatures and imaging-derived measures, and they are classified by function as diagnostic, prognostic, predictive, pharmacodynamic, or susceptibility and risk markers. Robust biomarkers underpin early detection, disease classification, monitoring, and stratified or personalized medicine, and their development demands rigorous analytical and clinical validation. Research relevant to this topic includes reviews of molecular biomarkers, choroidal imaging biomarkers in age-related macular degeneration, cellular and molecular biomarkers of the anti-inflammatory activity of probiotic bacteria, newborn microRNA expression as candidate diagnostic biomarkers, epigenetic and long-non-coding-RNA biomarkers in head and neck cancer, sleep and vital-organ biomarkers evaluated in cell-line and animal models, preconception immunoglobulin and complement markers in unexplained infertility, and metabolomic tools for assessing environmental exposure. Methods span molecular biology, immunoassay, omics technologies, imaging, and cell-based and animal studies. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the discovery, validation, and application of biomarkers in diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic monitoring.
