Overview

Human coronavirus OC43 is one of the seasonal human coronaviruses, a betacoronavirus that is a frequent cause of common colds and other mild respiratory infections worldwide, and which can occasionally contribute to more severe lower respiratory illness in vulnerable groups. It is part of the wider coronavirus family that also includes the viruses responsible for SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. The International Journal of Coronaviruses publishes peer-reviewed, open-access research spanning this virus family. Recent work in the journal includes a narrative review of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19), an analysis of the molecular evolutionary characteristics of the novel coronavirus, and a study of animals during the COVID-19 era as both sources and victims of infection. These studies support a broader understanding of coronavirus structure, evolution, and transmission relevant to readers studying any member of the family, including OC43.
