Overview

Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are closed-loop facilities for raising aquatic animals such as fish and shrimp in tanks where the water is continuously cleaned and reused rather than discharged. Water passes through mechanical and biological filtration to remove solids and convert toxic ammonia, and may also be aerated, temperature-controlled and disinfected before returning to the culture tanks. By recirculating water, RAS reduces water consumption, allows production independent of natural water bodies, improves biosecurity and helps contain waste, making it a focus of research into intensive and sustainable aquaculture. As a journal devoted to aquaculture research and development, this title publishes work on the science and practice of farming aquatic organisms, including production systems, water quality, feeding and husbandry, and growth performance. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to recirculating aquaculture systems and the engineering, water management and husbandry principles that support controlled-environment production of fish and other aquatic species.
