Overview

Elderly care, or geriatric care, is the organization and delivery of health and social services for older adults across the continuum from primary and community care through long-term and end-of-life care, including the substantial contribution of informal and family caregiving. It addresses the distinctive needs of an ageing population in which chronic disease, frailty, functional decline, and polypharmacy are common, and in which medication management and safe transitions between settings are central concerns. Equity issues are prominent, encompassing access to care, affordability and out-of-pocket spending, and the protection of vulnerable older people from abuse and neglect. The goals of elderly care extend beyond treatment of disease to maintaining independence, dignity, and quality of life, and to ensuring appropriate care at the end of life. Peer-reviewed research in this area examines care during pandemic lockdown, end-of-life care for older adults, the caregiving triangle during a pandemic, health insurance and out-of-pocket spending among the elderly, access to health care for older people in lower-resource settings, elder abuse and neglect, family management of medication among older adults with diabetes, primary healthcare and quality of life for older persons with non-communicable diseases, and the care of chronic and frail patients in general practice. These strands connect financing, safeguarding, and chronic-disease management within geriatric care.
