Overview
Mitral valve repair is a surgical procedure that restores the function of the mitral valve, the valve between the left atrium and left ventricle of the heart, rather than replacing it. It is most often performed to treat mitral regurgitation, a condition in which the valve fails to close completely and allows blood to leak backward into the left atrium when the heart contracts, increasing cardiac workload and potentially progressing to heart failure. Repair techniques aim to reshape or reinforce the valve's own tissue, leaflets, supporting cords, and surrounding ring so that it seals properly, preserving the patient's native valve and often avoiding the long-term anticoagulation associated with mechanical replacement. The valve can become incompetent for several reasons, including degenerative or myxomatous changes that thicken and weaken the leaflets, as well as rheumatic and other valvular heart disease. Imaging and functional assessment of the valve guide decisions about whether and how to repair it. Within the scope of Hypertension and Cardiology, which covers cardiac structure and function, this page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to mitral valve disease, including studies of the cellular and structural changes seen in myxomatous mitral valves.
