Overview

Diastolic pressure is the lower of the two numbers in a blood-pressure reading and represents the pressure exerted on the walls of the arteries when the heart is relaxed between beats and filling with blood. Together with systolic pressure, it is used to assess cardiovascular health, and persistently elevated diastolic pressure is one component of hypertension, a condition in which the force of blood against the arterial walls remains abnormally high. Elevated diastolic and overall blood pressure increase the workload on the heart and contribute over time to the development of cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, heart failure, and stroke. Measurement, monitoring, and control of blood pressure through lifestyle modification and pharmacological treatment are central to reducing these risks. Reflecting its Hypertension and Cardiology scope, this journal publishes research relevant to blood pressure and cardiac function, including ambulatory acoustic-cardiography assessment of cardiac function and sleep-disordered breathing, carotid intima-media thickness in young hypertensive patients, blood-pressure responses during isometric resistance exercise, hypertension prevalence, awareness and treatment, cardiac mechanics in systemic hypertension with preserved ejection fraction, hypertensive crisis epidemiology and outcomes, and the efficacy and safety of combination antihypertensive therapy, illustrating clinical and physiological dimensions of blood-pressure-related cardiovascular disease.
