Diastolic pressure is the lower of the two numbers in a blood-pressure reading and represents the pressure exerted on the walls of the arteries when the heart is relaxed between beats and filling with blood. Together with systolic pressure, it is used to assess cardiovascular health, and persistently elevated diastolic pressure is one component of hypertension, a condition in which the force of blood against the arterial walls remains abnormally high. Elevated diastolic and overall blood pressure increase the workload on the heart and contribute over time to the development of cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, heart failure, and stroke. Measurement, monitoring, and control of blood pressure through lifestyle modification and pharmacological treatment are central to reducing these risks.
