Overview
Metabolic disorders are conditions in which a defect in a specific enzyme or metabolic pathway disrupts the normal chemical processes the body uses to convert food into energy and to build and break down molecules, leading to the harmful accumulation or deficiency of particular metabolites. They may be inherited, as in many hereditary enzyme deficiencies, or acquired, and they range in severity from mild biochemical disturbances to serious illness affecting growth, the nervous system, the liver, and other organs. Common examples include disorders of lipid, amino acid, and carbohydrate metabolism, and the broader cluster of conditions described as metabolic syndrome. Research published by OpenAccessPub journals examines several facets of this field. Work on familial combined hyperlipidemia explores the molecular and metabolic pathogenesis of an inherited lipid disorder and its link to metabolic syndrome, while studies of amino acids and their derivatives address their role in the pathogenesis and treatment of liver diseases. Further articles consider diabetes mellitus type 2 through metabolomics and bioinformatics, and dietary and lifestyle interventions aimed at reducing cardio-metabolic risk factors. Together these peer-reviewed, open-access papers gather evidence relevant to the biology, diagnosis, and management of metabolic disorders.
