Overview
Blood disorders are conditions that affect the blood, its cellular components, or the tissues that produce them, disrupting the normal function of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, or the plasma proteins involved in clotting. They range from benign conditions to malignant diseases of the blood and bone marrow, and they may be inherited or acquired. Common categories include anemias, bleeding and clotting disorders, immune-mediated conditions affecting platelets, and cancers such as leukemias and lymphomas. Because the blood system supports oxygen delivery, immune defense, and wound healing, disturbances in any of its components can have wide-ranging effects on health. Within Hematology and Oncology Research, work in this area includes a study of inherited bleeding disorders and the genetic mutations affecting coagulation factors and regulatory proteins, as well as research on the laboratory tests used in the diagnosis of immune thrombocytopenia and general approaches to its treatment. Further work has examined acquired abnormalities of von Willebrand factor-related parameters and ADAMTS13 autoantibodies in aggressive hematological malignancies. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the diagnosis, mechanisms, and management of disorders affecting the blood and blood-forming tissues.
