Overview
Biotechnology is the application of biological systems, living organisms, or their components to develop products and processes that serve human purposes across medicine, agriculture, industry, and environmental management. It encompasses techniques such as Genetic Engineering, fermentation, cell and tissue culture, and the use of enzymes and microorganisms to make pharmaceuticals, vaccines, biofuels, improved crops, and industrial materials, as well as tools for diagnosis and bioremediation. Modern biotechnology increasingly integrates molecular biology with computational analysis to design and optimize biological products. Research published through Genetic Engineering and its companion titles engages directly with the field, including a forward-looking perspective on Biotechnology 2.0, a review of biotechnology as a response to climate-change disasters, an account of the emerging role of bioinformatics in biotechnology, a survey of biotechnological applications of cyanobacteria across agriculture, medicine, and the environment, a study of yeast-mediated bioprocesses and bio-products, and a widely cited review of industrial and biotechnological applications of algae. These works span the medical, agricultural, environmental, and computational dimensions of the discipline. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access scholarship relevant to biotechnology and the use of Genetic Engineering and related methods to address health, food, energy, and environmental challenges.
