Overview

Vesicles are small, membrane-bounded compartments within or derived from cells that store, transport, and release biomolecules across the cytoplasm and between cells. Bounded by a lipid bilayer, they mediate intracellular trafficking through the secretory and endocytic pathways, package hormones and neurotransmitters for regulated exocytosis, and maintain membrane exchange among organelles such as the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, and plasma membrane. Vesicle formation, targeting, and fusion depend on coat proteins, the GTPase dynamin, and SNARE-mediated membrane fusion machinery. Extracellular vesicles, including exosomes and microvesicles, additionally carry proteins and nucleic acids in intercellular signaling, while synthetic vesicles such as liposomes serve as drug-delivery carriers. The peer-reviewed research relevant to vesicle and membrane biology gathered here includes characterization of lipid components in the dynamin fraction prepared from brain tissue and studies of the thermal and physical stability of modified polymerizable liposomes engineered for improved photoactivity in delivery applications. Additional contributions touch on plasma-membrane charge-density effects and lipid organization. Methodologically, the literature draws on biochemical fractionation, lipid and membrane characterization, and formulation analysis, illustrating how vesicle biology connects membrane dynamics, intracellular transport, and the engineering of bilayer-based carriers for therapeutic and experimental use.
