Overview

nCoV, short for novel coronavirus, is the provisional designation given to a newly identified coronavirus before it receives a formal taxonomic name, used most prominently for 2019-nCoV, the virus first detected in late 2019 and subsequently named SARS-CoV-2, the cause of COVID-19. Coronaviruses are enveloped, positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses whose surface spike protein mediates attachment to host-cell receptors and entry; this protein is a principal target of neutralising antibodies and of efforts to map B-cell epitopes for diagnostics and vaccine design. SARS-CoV-2 spreads chiefly through respiratory droplets and aerosols and produces illness ranging from asymptomatic infection and mild respiratory symptoms to severe pneumonia, respiratory failure, and death, with characteristic findings on chest imaging in more serious cases. Research on the novel coronavirus has spanned its origin and transmission, computational prediction of immunogenic epitopes, viral kinetics under different treatment regimens, the role of imaging such as chest computed tomography in diagnosis and assessment, and the rapid development of vaccines, alongside critical evaluation and, where warranted, retraction of unsupported claims. Understanding the virology, immunology, clinical course, diagnosis, and treatment of nCoV infection has been central to managing the pandemic and to preparing for future emerging coronaviruses, informing prevention, therapeutic strategy, and the design of vaccines and diagnostic methods.
