Overview
Infectious diseases comprise illnesses caused by pathogenic microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites, and HIV infection and AIDS represent one of the most significant examples within this category. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) attacks and progressively weakens the immune system, and untreated infection can advance to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), the stage at which the body becomes highly susceptible to opportunistic infections and certain cancers. HIV is transmitted through contact with specific body fluids, including blood and semen, through sexual contact, and from mother to child during pregnancy, delivery, or breastfeeding, and it is managed but not cured with antiretroviral therapy. Research in this journal situates HIV infection and AIDS within their clinical, behavioral, and social contexts, frequently in high-burden settings. Studies address theoretical frameworks for working with people living with HIV and AIDS, the potential of phytochemicals and plant-derived formulations to affect HIV progression, HIV prevention among adolescents, preventive lifestyle practices among students, clinical profiles and outcomes of hospitalized HIV-infected patients in the era of combination therapy, and the effects of antiretroviral agents on cellular aging. Additional work examines counseling and testing, condom use, and risk factors among various populations. Key aspects of the field include transmission and pathogenesis, prevention, antiretroviral treatment, and the clinical and social management of HIV-associated disease.
