Overview

Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is a type of breast cancer that begins in the lobules, the milk-producing glands of the breast, and then grows into the surrounding breast tissue. It is the second most common form of invasive breast cancer after invasive ductal carcinoma, accounting for roughly one in ten cases. ILC has distinctive biological and clinical features: its cells often grow in single-file strands rather than forming a discrete lump, which can make the tumor harder to feel on examination and more difficult to detect on standard mammography. The disease is typically hormone-receptor positive, meaning it is driven in part by estrogen, and it has characteristic patterns of how and where it can spread. Diagnosis relies on imaging and tissue biopsy, and management generally combines surgery with hormone therapy and, depending on the case, radiation or chemotherapy. Because of its diffuse growth pattern, ILC can present challenges for both detection and surgical planning. Breast Cancer Survival publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to the diagnosis, biology, treatment, and outcomes of breast cancer, the broader field in which invasive lobular carcinoma is studied. This page gathers open-access research relevant to invasive lobular carcinoma and breast cancer more generally.
