Overview

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a chronic, progressive condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood efficiently enough to meet the body's needs, leading to a backup of fluid in the lungs, abdomen, and extremities. It develops when the heart muscle becomes too weak or too stiff to fill and empty properly, often as a consequence of coronary artery disease, high Blood Pressure, prior heart attack, valve disorders, or other cardiac conditions. Characteristic symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, and swelling (edema) from fluid retention, and the condition is a major cause of hospitalization and reduced quality of life. Diagnosis relies on clinical evaluation, imaging such as echocardiography, and biomarkers, while management combines lifestyle measures, medications that reduce the heart's workload and control fluid, treatment of underlying causes, and, in selected cases, devices or procedures. Within the scope of Blood Pressure, this collection includes related cardiovascular work, including overviews of heart failure in family medicine and analyses of cardiorenal signaling pathways in heart failure, as well as studies of coronary intervention. The page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to cardiovascular disease, heart failure, and its management.
