Overview
Protein interactions are the physical and functional contacts that proteins make with one another and with other molecules inside cells, and they underpin essentially all biological processes. Through these interactions proteins form complexes, transmit signals, catalyse reactions, regulate gene expression, and build cellular structures, so understanding which proteins bind, how strongly, and under what conditions is central to molecular and cell biology. Researchers study protein interactions using affinity purification, mass spectrometry, structural analysis, and computational and bioinformatic approaches. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to protein interactions published across OpenAccessPub journals. On-topic work includes the optimization and ZSPORE analysis of affinity purification coupled with tandem mass spectrometry in mammalian cells, a method directly aimed at characterising protein complexes, and a bioinformatic analysis of coronary-disease-associated single-nucleotide polymorphisms and genes to identify proteins potentially involved in atherosclerosis. Further studies address the functional, structural, and contextual analysis of a BRCA1 variant of uncertain clinical significance, in silico inhibition of essential Candida albicans proteins by the marine antifungal peptide arenicin, and the elastic properties of the immunoglobulin domains of insect projectin. Together these articles reflect the experimental and computational study of how proteins associate and function in health and disease.
