Overview

Genetics is the scientific study of heredity and variation, examining how genes, the units of inherited information encoded in DNA, are transmitted across generations and how they influence the structure, function, and traits of organisms. The field encompasses transmission genetics, which describes the inheritance of alleles; molecular genetics, concerned with gene structure and regulation; population genetics, which analyzes the distribution and change of allele frequencies under forces such as selection, mutation, migration, and genetic drift; and quantitative genetics, which partitions complex traits into heritable and environmental components. Applications are wide-ranging. In agriculture, genetic principles underpin precision breeding and the improvement of crops and livestock. In evolutionary biology, allele-based and mathematical models illuminate natural selection, speciation, and extinction, while developmental genetics addresses how regulatory genes shape ontogeny. In medicine, the study of candidate genes, heritability, and gene involvement in tumor formation and cardiovascular and neurological conditions informs diagnosis and the understanding of disease risk. Contemporary genetics also grapples with missing heritability in genome-wide studies and the interaction of genetic predisposition with cultural and environmental factors. By connecting molecular detail to inheritance patterns and evolutionary dynamics, genetics provides a unifying framework for understanding biological continuity and diversity across all forms of life.
