Overview
Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) is a laboratory technique used to separate charged biological molecules, particularly proteins and nucleic acids, according to their size, shape, and charge. Samples are loaded into a gel made of cross-linked polyacrylamide and subjected to an electric field, causing molecules to migrate through the porous gel matrix at rates determined largely by their molecular size. Variants such as SDS-PAGE denature proteins and coat them with a uniform negative charge so that separation depends chiefly on molecular weight, enabling estimation of size and assessment of purity. PAGE is a fundamental tool in biochemistry, molecular biology, and proteomics, supporting the analysis of protein composition, the characterization of nucleic acids, and applications in research and diagnostics. In forensic and molecular contexts, electrophoretic separation underpins the analysis of biological samples, the study of biomarkers, and the characterization of proteins and DNA. The technique therefore sits within the broad analytical toolkit of Advanced Forensic Sciences, which applies molecular and biochemical methods to the identification and examination of biological evidence and the study of disease-related molecules. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to molecular and forensic analysis within the broad scope of Advanced Forensic Sciences.
