Biography
Elizabeth McElnea is affiliated with University Hospital Galway, where her work focuses on ophthalmology with particular emphasis on complex ocular conditions. Her research encompasses glaucoma complications following vitrectomy and silicone oil injection for complicated retinal detachment, as well as hypotony as a complication of trabeculectomy with mitomycin C. She is notably recognized for her most-cited publication on the ocular manifestations of mitochondrial disease, including ptosis, ophthalmoplegia, and corneal endothelial disease (2021). Her clinical and research contributions address both surgical complications in ophthalmology and the intersection of systemic mitochondrial disorders with ocular pathology.
