Three routes lead to the same editorial office, and a manuscript is handled the same way whichever one it arrives by. Choose the one that suits you, and use only that one.
The routes

Authors must use only one submission route for the same manuscript.
The alternative form arrives with this journal already selected, so a manuscript sent through it reaches the Journal of Plant and Animal Ecology rather than the general queue. The assisted route is for authors who would rather write to the editorial office directly, and for anyone who needs help preparing a submission.

Read the Aims and Scope page and, if you are unsure, write to the editorial office before preparing a full submission.
Prepare the files
Work through the Instructions for Authors, including the declarations and the data-availability statement, and the checklist at the end.
Submit through one route
Authors must use only one submission route for the same manuscript. Sending the same manuscript through more than one route creates duplicate records and delays the assessment.
What happens next
All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts. Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
