What this journal is for

Pain is studied from more than one direction at once, and a journal of pain management has to be able to hold all of them.

Scholarship in this field may investigate why pain occurs, how it is assessed, how interventions and systems are evaluated, how function and participation are affected, and how care is experienced and delivered. International Journal of Pain Management exists so that those questions can be published in one place and read against one another, rather than kept in separate literatures.

The remit follows the journal’s title rather than any single modality. Analgesia and pharmacology, neuromodulation and procedures, rehabilitation, behavioral and psychological care, measurement science, decision support, and the basic biology of nociception are all within scope, and the subject is what defines the journal.

Areas of inquiry

Four lenses on the same subject

They overlap by design. A single study often sits in more than one, and the journal reads them as complementary rather than sequential.

01

Mechanisms and modulation

How pain is generated, carried, amplified and damped — in tissue, in peripheral nerves, and in the central circuits that interpret them. Work here is read against the strength of its model and its measurements, and reports what that model showed.

02

Measurement and assessment

How pain and its consequences are captured: validated instruments, patient and observer report, and the methodological work that establishes what an instrument can carry.

03

Intervention and care

How treatments, procedures, programs and services are evaluated, and how care is organized and delivered across settings and disciplines.

04

Function and lived experience

What pain means for movement, sleep, attention, mood, work and participation, and how people describe living with it and being cared for. Accounts of experience and of service delivery belong in the record alongside mechanism and trial evidence.

Who the journal is for

An interdisciplinary readership that reads across its own boundaries. Contributions are welcome from any of these directions; what the journal asks is that a submission be legible to a reader from another one.

Clinical researchers and clinicians
In pain medicine, anesthesiology, neurology, dentistry and rehabilitation.
Basic and translational scientists
Working on nociception, modulation and the biology of persistent pain.
Methodologists and measurement scientists
Developing and appraising the instruments that pain research depends on.
Allied health and rehabilitation specialists
Including physiotherapy and psychology, where daily activity and independence are the outcomes studied.
Editorial responsibility

What the journal undertakes

The standard of evidence follows the claim. A mechanistic study, a measurement study and a clinical evaluation are each read against what their own design can support.
Editorial decisions are independent of fees, services, memberships and roles.

All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal’s scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review.

Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request.

Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.

Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal.
