Scope boundary
What the journal does not consider
A manuscript outside these boundaries may be declined without external review.
- Clinical case reports and case series Individual patient diagnosis, treatment outcome and clinical management sit outside a population health focus.
- Diagnostic method development Laboratory technique, diagnostic accuracy and biomarker discovery without a population health application.
- Basic science and molecular research Cellular mechanism, molecular pathway and animal model studies without direct population health relevance.
- Opinion without data Commentaries, editorials and perspectives lacking empirical evidence or systematic analysis are rarely considered.
The journal also does not consider individual patient care, clinical treatment protocols, diagnostic procedures or therapeutic interventions.

How a manuscript is handled
From submission to version of record
Peer review is single-blind (double-blind on request). Each manuscript is assessed by at least two independent specialists in the relevant area of global health.
- 1Initial assessment The editorial office verifies scope alignment, formatting compliance and overall scientific quality.
- 2Similarity screening Every submission is screened with iThenticate. Self-plagiarism is also monitored.
- 3Independent peer review At least two specialists assess validity, rigour and clarity, and report to the handling editor.
- 4Decision and revision The decision is made on the reviews and the manuscript. Authors may appeal to the editorial office within 30 days, providing justification and any additional evidence.
- 5Publication Accepted articles are published open access under CC BY 4.0 with a registered Crossref DOI.
- 6Correction after publication Errors are addressed by erratum, corrigendum or correction notice; demonstrated misconduct by retraction, following COPE guidance.

What it costs and what you keep
Every article is free to read on publication. Authors retain copyright and the journal charges no subscription.
Article processing charge
USD 1,800
Charged only after a manuscript has been accepted.
There is no submission fee, page charge, colour figure fee or
supplementary material charge.
- Students and trainees
- USD 900 for MPH, DrPH and PhD students. A supervisor recommendation is required.
- Waivers
- Authors in World Bank low-income countries are eligible for a waiver, and partial waivers are available for lower-middle-income countries. Discretionary waivers for financial hardship are considered case by case at submission.
- Independence
- A charge, a discount or a waiver has no bearing on whether a manuscript is reviewed favourably or accepted.
Rights and reuse
Articles are published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. Authors retain copyright; anyone may read, redistribute and build on the work with attribution. Terms are set out in the copyright and licence policy.
Withdrawal
A manuscript withdrawn more than three days after submission in order to be sent elsewhere attracts a 30% withdrawal fee. Withdrawal must be confirmed by the editorial office before submitting elsewhere.

Common questions about the journal
Is my study in scope?
If the unit of analysis is a population rather than an individual patient, and the work concerns epidemiology, disease surveillance, population risk factors, health systems or health policy, it is in scope. Clinical case reports, diagnostic accuracy studies, basic laboratory science and data-free commentary are not.
How is my manuscript reviewed?
Review is single-blind, with double-blind review available on request. At least two independent specialists assess each manuscript for validity, rigour and clarity. Every submission is screened with iThenticate before review.
What will it cost, and when do I pay?
The article processing charge is USD 1,800, payable only after acceptance. MPH, DrPH and PhD students pay USD 900 with a supervisor recommendation. Authors in low-income countries are eligible for a waiver and those in lower-middle-income countries for a partial waiver; hardship waivers are considered case by case at submission.

Who owns the article once it is published?
The authors do. Articles appear under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence, so anyone may read, redistribute and build on the work provided the authors are credited. Each article carries a registered Crossref DOI.
What can I do if I disagree with a decision?
Authors may submit a formal appeal to the editorial office within 30 days, providing justification and any additional evidence. The appeal procedure is documented in the journal’s editorial policies.
Which indexing services list the journal?
