Open access
Reading the journal
Articles are published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license, and authors retain copyright. There is no paywall, no subscription and no registration step between a reader and an article.
Under that license the work may be read, redistributed, translated, taught from and built on — including commercially — provided the original is properly attributed. That is what allows the journal’s articles to be copied into course materials, quoted at length, mined and re-hosted without anyone asking first.

Routes in
Finding an article
The journal’s own pages are the authoritative route to its record.
- Current issue. The issue the journal is publishing into, with every record it contains.
- Archives. The complete published record, by volume and issue, with pagination and publication dates.
- Article pages. Each article has its own stable page carrying the full text, the author list and the publication metadata.
- Article files. Articles are produced in the formats the journal publishes, so a reader can work from the version that suits them.

Preservation
Keeping the record available
This journal’s content is committed to Portico, a not-for-profit digital-preservation archive run by ITHAKA (the organization behind JSTOR). As articles are deposited they enter Portico’s permanent archive, so the scholarly record stays available for the long term — even if a title one day ceases to publish.

Funder deposit
PubMed Central through NIHMS
Eligible NIH-funded manuscripts may be deposited individually in PubMed Central through the NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS).
Authors with NIH funding can use this route for their own manuscript, alongside the journal’s own open-access publication. The editorial office can advise on the steps at [email protected].
