Biography:
- Dr. Steven F. Abcouwer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences, University of Michigan College of Medicine, Kellogg Eye Center.
- Dr. Abcouwer completed undergraduate work in Chemical Engineering at the University of Missouri-Columbia and obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering with a specialization in Biochemical Engineering from the University of Houston.
- He completed postdoctoral training in tumor biology at Monsanto Health Sciences in St. Louis Missouri.
- He has held academic positions in the Department of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, and the Department of Surgery at Penn State University College of Medicine.
- Dr. Abcouwer's research entails the mechanisms of neurodegeneration, neuroinflammation and vascular dysfunction in diabetic retinopathy and other ischemic retinal diseases.
- His present research interests include the role of bone marrow derived precursor cells, inflammatory leukocytes and retina-resident microglia on vascular repair, neurodegeneration and inflammatory processes in the retina.
- Dr. Abcouwer is an Editorial Board Member of the American Journal of Physiology - Endocrinology and Metabolism as well as the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology.
- He is currently a member of the American Diabetes Association Research Grant Review Panel.
