Research Interests:

  • Research interests of Giulia Auriemma focus especially on the use of laminar jet break-up technology for the development of oral controlled delivery systems loaded with anti-inflammatory drugs potentially useful in the treatment of chronic inflammatory-based diseases such as arthritis, arthrosis, asthma and allergic rhinitis, also called Early Morning Pathologies.
  • In this type of research activity, it is essential the accurate selection of polymeric materials/carriers, model anti-inflammatory drugs, microencapsulation operative conditions, stabilization and curing techniques and the complete technological characterization in terms of micromeritics, inner structure, drug loading and in vitro/in vivo drug release.
  • Particularly, Dr. Giulia Auriemma has proposed the application of innovative prilling-based tandem techniques for the production of microspheres (gel-beads) with controlled release properties.
  • The proposed technique are based on the combination of prilling with microwave- or supercritical fluid- assisted drying and with enteric coating processes.
  • In addition, research interests of Giulia Auriemma also concern other micro-encapsulation techniques such as spray-drying and supercritical fluid assisted technologies (e.g. Supercritical Assisted Atomization_SAA) for the production of microsystems for pulmonary, topical and transdermal drug delivery.
  • In the last few months she has focused her research interests in 3D Printing of biodegradable polymers for scaffolds and drug delivery systems working as visiting research fellow at University of Santiago De Compostela (USC), Spain, under the supervision of professor Carmen Alvarez Lorenzo.

Biography:

  • Giulia Auriemma, graduated in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technology (summa cum laude) in 2009 from University of Salerno, is research fellow of Pharmaceutical Technology at the Department of Pharmacy, University of Salerno, Italy.
  • She gained the Ph.D. degree in Science and Technologies for Chemical, Pharmaceutical and Food Industry in 2013, discussing a thesis entitled -Prilling-based Tandem Techniques: design and development of NSAIDs controlled delivery systems. Since then her research interest has been in the field of micro-technologies applied in pharmaceutics.
  • Her research activities focused on laminar jet break-up technology for the design and the development of NSAIDs and SAIDs controlled delivery systems potentially useful in the treatment of inflammatory-based diseases. Giulia Auriemma also experienced additional micro-encapsulation techniques such as spray-drying and supercritical fluid assisted technologies (i.e. SAE, SAA) for the production of microsystems for pulmonary, topical and transdermal drug delivery.
  • In the last few months she has focused her research interests in 3D Printing of biodegradable polymers for scaffolds and drug delivery systems working as visiting research fellow at University of Santiago De Compostela (USC), Spain, under the supervision of professor Carmen Alvarez Lorenzo.
  • At University of Salerno, she is also lecturer of the course “Quality Assurance in Pharmaceutical Industry” (since 2014), education committee member of Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Technology (since 2011) and co-advisor of some thesis projects.
  • Giulia Auriemma is co-author of 13 research papers published on international journals, 3 conference proceedings with ISBN, 2 e-book chapter.
  • She produced about 30 communications at national and international meetings.
