How editors assess a manuscript
Editors assess each submission against the journal’s scope and the standards of the study design it reports, and they commission the reviewers whose evidence a decision rests on.
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Those decisions are independent of fees, services, membership, and editorial or reviewer roles.
Editors recuse themselves from decisions on their own submissions, which are handled independently.
