Enzymes publishes peer-reviewed research on enzyme structure, mechanism, kinetics, regulation, engineering, biocatalysis and their applications. Three routes are open, and they reach the same editorial office.
Before you send
Four things worth checking
A few minutes here saves a return for correction later.
- Does the work fit? The enzyme should carry the scientific question. Aims and Scope sets out the remit and its boundaries.
- Is the manuscript prepared? Article type and word limit, structured abstract and keywords, figure and table formats, Vancouver references, and the enzyme reporting the journal asks for.
- Are the declarations in place? Ethics approval, trial registration where it applies, data availability, CRediT contributions and competing interests.
- Do you know what publication costs? The article processing charge by category, invoiced after acceptance. There is no submission fee and no charge for review.

The three submission routes
All three are approved and all three are equal. Pick the one that suits how you prefer to work.

Authors must use only one submission route for the same manuscript.
Sending the same manuscript by two routes creates two submissions of the same work, which the journal has to reconcile before anything else can happen. If you are not sure whether a submission went through, ask the editorial office rather than sending it again.

What to send with the manuscript
Whichever route you use, the same set of files makes a complete submission.
The manuscript
A Word document containing the text, references, tables and figure legends, double-spaced, with page and line numbers.
A separate title page
Title, full author names with affiliations and ORCID identifiers, and the corresponding author's contact details. Keeping it separate is what makes an anonymized manuscript possible if you request double-blind review.
Figures as separate files
High-resolution files at 300 dpi or better, in TIFF, JPEG, PNG or EPS.
A cover letter
Addressed to the Editor-in-Chief: what the work shows, why it suits this journal, confirmation that it is original and not under consideration elsewhere, any reviewers you suggest or ask to be avoided, and competing interests.

What happens next
All submissions undergo initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that meet the journal's scope and minimum requirements proceed to independent peer review. Single-blind by default; double-blind review is available on request. Manuscripts that proceed to external peer review are normally evaluated by at least two independent subject-matter experts.
Editorial decisions are based on scope, scientific quality, methodological rigor, ethical compliance, reporting quality, and relevance to the journal. Decisions remain independent of fees, services, memberships, and editorial or reviewer roles.
